Searching For A Nazm

Curiosity + Internet = Interesting Stuff.

I have this nazm by some singer Rochna from an album Izhaar. I don’t know anything else about either the singer or the poet. But it is a great nazm and the singer has done full justice to it.

Here follows the nazm:

apnii naakaamiyoN se Dartaa huuN
jab tere shah’r se guzartaa huuN

tere dilkash salaam aate the
zindagii ke payaam aate the
maiN masarrat se jhuum jaataa thaa
aise rangiiN muqaam aate the
us zamaane ko yaad kartaa huuN
jab tere shah’r se guzartaa huuN

ab kisii Ghair kii tuu kismat hai
phir bhii dil meN terii muhabbat hai
yaad rakhnaa ke tere kuuche meN
merii naakaamiyoN kii turbat hai
aur maiN huuN ke tujh pe martaa huuN
jab tere shah’r se guzartaa huuN

hamne Khaake hayaat ke khiiNche
sabz mehNdii kii baaRh ke piiche
ret ke ghar banaaye the jitne
aa gaye tere paaNv ke niiche
maiN vahiiN do ghaRii Thehartaa huuN
jab tere shah’r se guzartaa huuN

Searching more about the singer and the poet I googled ‘jab tere shaher se guzarta hoon’ and found another amazing piece of poetry by Saifuddin Saif in the same zamiin and echoing similar emotions. I especially liked the last two lines:

kis tamannaa se tujh ko chaahaa thaa
kis muhabbat se haar maanii hai

As luck would have it the great Amanat Ali Khan has rendered this nazm in his own inimitable style. But I am not sure about the one by Rochna. Who is Rochna and who is the author of the nazm? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Siyaah, I like this nazm too.

    As far as uploading is concerned, I don’t think it possible with blogspot. Also, you would need your own web-space as well.

    I too came here to find about Rochna but so far haven’t found anything constructive about this singer as to who she is, what her other works are and where i can listen to her more.

    My fav track from her album is Gesu-e-Tabdar Ko Aur bhi Tabdaar Kar which is written by Allama Iqbal. I found lyrics of it on a website which seems to error out after loading: http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pritchett/00urdu/iqbal/gesuetab.html
    I am transcribing the lyrics here which appear in the ghazal. It is sung very beautifully and Rochna (or Roshna??) has a very mature and ‘raseeli’ voice. Nice blog by the way. Do expand on this if you find more info.

    gesu-e-tabdaar ko aur bhi tabdar kar
    hosh-o-Khirad shikaar kar, qalb-o-nazar shikaar kar!

    ishq bhi ho hijab mei, husn bhi hijab mei!
    ya tu khud aashkaar ho, ya mujhe aaskhaar kar!

    tu hai muheet-e-bekraaN, mei hooN zara si aabju
    ya mujhe hamkinaar kar, ya mujhe bekinaar kar!

    bag-e-bihisht se mujhe hukm-e-safar diya tha kyooN?
    kaar-e jahaaN daraaz hai, ab mera intazar kar!

    roz-e-hisaab jab mera peesh ho daftar-e-amal
    aap bhi sharmsaar ho, mujh ko bhi sharmsaar kar!

    this is a heavenly voice truly .she is Rochna Dahanukar she sang for CRESCENDO MUSIC CO which is now defunct .she possibly lived in poona. she i think had 3 albums of ghazals ZIKR, IZHAAR and third one i dont remember this was in early 90’s it was cassettes those days

    reminds me of my great grand father. It was his favorite…and heard a lot of it during my summer vacations….it became my favorite as well…..amazing vocals…can u send me the mp3 pls
