Top 25 Ghazals Of Jagjit Singh
March 24th, 2007 Posted in Music, Urdu PoetryHere is a list of 25 of my favorite Jagjit Singh Ghazals in alphabetical order. Please note that these are Jagjit Singh Ghazals therefore neither duets nor nazms are included. It started with 10 Ghazals then quickly expanded to 20 and then I had to finally stop myself at 25. I didn’t knew I was such an ardent Jagjit Singh fan. Obviously this is a very a personal listing and has developed over a long period of time. Some Ghazals I loved 5 years ago do not even figure here.
Now, have you had a chance to listen to all these Ghazals? Did I miss out on one of your absoulte favorites? Please share your views on this. If you haven’t listened to a Ghazal but are interested, please drop me a comment and I will try to upload the audio. Links to lyrics will be added over time.

- ai Khudaa ret ke sehraa ko samandar kar de

- tumko dekhaa to ye Khayaal aayaa
- tum nahiiN Gham nahiiN sharaab nahiiN
- vo Khat ke purze uRaa rahaa thaa
I hate to exclude these Ghazals but unfortunately there can be only 25 Ghazals in a list of 25.
- abhii vo kamsin ubhar rahaa abhii hai us par shabaab aadhaa
- dil-e-naadaaN tujhe hu’aa kyaa hai
- dost ban bane ke mile mujhko miTaane vaale
- ko’ii chaudaviiN raat kaa chaand ban kar tumhaare tasavvur meN aayaa to hogaa

hum khafa kab the manaane ki zaroorat kya hai.”

Welcome to the blog!
I like the Ghazal you mentioned but not so much as to feature in the top 25 list. I also like ‘yaa to miT jaaiye yaa miTaa deejiye’ which also has a similar feel to this Ghazal.

Raat gayi kar tara tara
Bhoya dil da dard adhaara…
This punjabi ghazal by Jagjit Singh brings tears to my eyes each time I listen to it.

Would love to get the lyrics and a translation of “tujhse ruKhsat kii vo shaam-e-ashk-afshaaN haaye haaye.” I just heard it for the first time, and am in love with it - could someone please post the translation.

“koi paas aaya sawere sawere,
mujhe aazmaya sawere sawere.
Meri daastaan ko zara sa badalke
mujhe hi sunaya savere savere”
Love a live version of this ghazal (the only version I have heard)!
Most of his ghazals just grow on me.. Not sure whether I can ever make a list of 25 top Jagjit Singh ghazals.. I guess what mood I am in decides which one of his ghazals are top at a certain time!

I think this should not excluded from the top 20
Woh Kaghaz ki kashti woh barish ka paani
This is just my opinion.
By Mohib on Sep 15, 2007
Ahmad Kareem:
woh kaghaz ki kashti is more of a nazm than a Ghazal.

‘Baat Niklegi To Phir,’ Should Have Also Been In Ur 25 List.
By Mohib on Sep 26, 2007
Makaveli:
Again, it is a nazm not a Ghazal.

Mana hai mushtekhak se barkar nehi hoo main
umro jalwomai bas or ho
Chand ke sath koi dard e purane
AAh ko chayea ik umro asar hone tak
If anyone have not heard Jagjit live concert
“A tribute to Ghalib”must be listened. It will notice you if Ghalib was alive he would be gratefull to Jagjit.

Tujhse rukhsat ki vo shaam-e-ashk-afshaan haaye haaye
Vo udaasi vo fizaa-e-giriya saamaa.n haaye haaye
(Ah! that evening of your sepearation.
That evening of lamentation and tears)
Yaa.n kaf-e-paa choom lene ki bhinchi si aarzoo
Vaa.n bagalgiri ka sharmaaya sa armaa.n haaye haaye
(Here, I could’nt wait to kiss your feet. There you could’nt wait to come in my embrace)
Vo mere ho.nthon pe kuch kahne ki hasrat vaa-e-shauk
Vo teri aankhon me kuch sun-ne ka armaan haaye haaye
(My lips desperately wanted to say something to you. And your eyes desperately wanted to hear something from me)

I think you missed my fav. song
Socha nahin achha bura dekha suna kuchh bhi nahi,
maanga khudase raat din tere siva kuchh bhi nahi.
Dekha tuje, socha tuje, chaha, tuje puja tuje,
meri khata meri wafa, teri khata kuch bhi nahin.
jis par hamari aankh ne moti bichhaye raat bhar,
bheja wahi kagaz use humne likha kuchh bhi nahi.
Ek shaam ki dahliz par bethe rahe woh der tak,
aankhon se ki baaton munhse kaha kuchh bhi nahi.
